Matauri Bay

We spent the next two nights at a gorgeous beach, Matauri Bay on the east coast north of the Bay of Islands.

The ladies who work there are just lovely and the facilities were great. Only complaint would be that their BBQ was rusted out and unusable, a replacement would be a good idea.

It’s right on two ocean bays, both so pretty, surrounded by Norfolk pines and a large hill, it’s also the resting ground of the Rainbow Warrior and it’s memorial.

On the second morning I got up early to go fishing off the beach. While I never caught anything, the sunrise was incredible and a pod of orcas jumped around in the bay casting awesome silhouettes. I felt really lucky to witness them, ironic really as I thought I’d have seen them living in Canada first rather than here.

We just chilled out on the beach and I read a lot. Was nice to hang out with the family with no distractions.

I’d like to go back and relax there or a few days at some point.
